The squares of the blanket are worked in the lemon peel stitch. Then, they’re each trimmed with a decorative picot edging. MATERIALS:

Hook: H/8/5mm

Yarn: Berroco Vintage DK – 3 skeins Smoke (2106), 1 skein each Charcoal (2189) and Sky Blue (2132)

Yardage: 660 yds main color, 85 yds border color; 45 yds contrasting ear color

Tools: Scissors, stitch maker, tapestry needle, polyfil stuffing, 15mm safety eyes (optional)

ABBREVIATIONS:

st = stitch

ch = chain

sl st= slip stitch

sc=single crochet

dc=double crochet

sk=skip

sp=space

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

FINISHED SIZE: 12” long from ears to tip, 14” each side of the blanket square

Gauge: 12 rnds x 8 (sc, dc) groups = 4”, 20 rnds x 20 single crochet = 4”

PATTERN:

Foundation Rnd: Begin with a magic circle in Smoke, and make 8 sc.

Rnd 1: 2 sc into each st around. (16 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc into the first st, sc into the next st, *2 sc into the next st, sc into the next st, repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Rnd 3: 2 sc into the first st, sc into the next 2 sts, *2 sc into the next st, sc into the next 2 sts, repeat from * around. (32 sc)

Rnd 4: 2 sc into the first st, sc into the next 3 sts, *2 sc into the next st, sc into the next 3 sts, repeat from * around. (40 sc)

Rnds 5-12: Sc into each st around.

Rnd 13: Sc2tog in the first 2 sts, sc into each of the next 3 sts. *Sc2tog in the next 2 sts, sc into each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * around. (32 sc)

Rnd 14: Sc2tog in the first 2 sts, sc into each of the next 2 sts. *Sc2tog in the next 2 sts, sc into each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * around. (24 sc)

Rnd 15: Sc2tog in the first 2 sts, sc into the next st. *Sc2tog in the next 2 sts, sc into the next st, repeat from * around. (16 sc)

Rnd 16: Sc2tog in each st around (8 sc)

Rnd 17: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 18: 2 sc in each st around. (16 sc)

Rnd 19: 2 sc in each st around. (32 sc)

Rnd 20: Sc into each of the first 3 sts,  *(sc, ch 2, sc) in the next st, sc into each of the next 7 sts, repeat from * until 5 sts remain, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next st, sc in each of the last 4 sts. (36 sc and 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 21: Sc into the first st, dc into the next st, sc into the next st, dc into the next st, *(sc, dc, ch 2, sc, dc) in ch-2 sp, [sc into the next st, dc into the next st] twice, (sc, dc) into the next st**, [sc into the next st, dc into the next st] twice, repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, join in top of first st. (20 sc, 20 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 22: *(Sc, dc) into each sc across to next ch-2 corner, (sc, dc, ch 2, sc, dc) in ch-2 sp, repeat from * around. (28 sc, 28 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnds 23-34: Repeat rnd 22. (124 sc, 124 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Break yarn, attach Charcoal.

Rnd 35: Sc into each st and ch around. Fasten off. (256 sc)

Ears (Make 2: 1 Smoke, 1 Sky Blue)

Foundation Row: Ch 5, sc in the 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 2 sts, 3 sc into the last ch, place a marker in center of 3 sts just made, working down opposite side of ch, sc in each of 3 chs, turn. (9 sc)

Row 1: Sc in each st across, working 3 sc in the marked st and moving marker up to center st, turn.  (11 sc)

Row 2: Repeat row 1, fasten off leaving a 8” tail. (13 sc)

Assembly and Finishing:

Using the sky blue thread, embroider the nose on the center of the face. Using either the charcoal yarn or safety eyes, place the eyes 2 rows above the nose, keeping about 5 sts between the eyes. Line up the center of the ears with the eyes, and st on at the very top of the head. Weave in all ends. Stuff the head, and use a 12” piece of smoke yarn to sew the neck shut, making at least 3-4 loops around the neck. Tie ends together securely, then weave in.
